Assistant Ocean Kayak Guide* All courses take place in an ocean environment
Assistant Guide - May 3-8, 2011 - Clayoquot Sound - $1498
Prerequisites for Assistant Guide Certification:
Currently requires the completion of 30 days assistant guiding under the direction of a certified guide. Must be at least 19 years of age and possess the following current documentation
- Essential Wilderness First Aid for Leaders (or equivalent)
- Voluntary Marine Radio Operator's Certificate
- Successful completion of the CFOKE Assistant guide/ educator's exam or successful completion of a certified ACSKG ( Association of Canadian Sea Kayak Guides) Leadership Course.
- Harmonic Wilderness Travel Certificate
- A complete guide log summary of past trips
- Annual documentation of beach and campsite clean-ups in guiding areas.
Until further notice, CFOKE Leadership Course graduates qualify for ACSKG assistant guide certification, and the reverse is true, ACSKG Certified Assistants qualify for CFOKE endorsement.
The evaluation process will consist of:
- Safety and judgement demonstration in a variety of situations.
- Teaching a mini workshop.
- Instructing a major workshop.
- Familiarity and demonstration of leadership styles appropriate to the specific situation.
- Scenarios and simulations.
- A basing of all decisions upon a foundation of personal and group safety at all times.
- Demonstration of the ability to perform specific hard skills in a variety of situations.
- There will be a written and practical component.
- There will be a written evaluation of the candidate.
The review board will be comprised of a minimum of 2 evaluators. The evaluation will be based upon an objective evaluation of tangible skill demonstration.
Membership Dues
To maintain valid certification guides need to submit the following documentation and fees on an annual basis:
Assistant Guides $25 per year, and all guides with log documentation, beach and marine restoration, and proof of current First Aid and CPR.
